Asingeline, an enacted thought

2011-2021

Red lines are used (literally and figuratively) to draw a limit that signifies warning, danger and division. In contrast, Asingeline attempts to use such red lines in order to create connections and integrations. During the action, the performers use red Gaffer tape to mark a straight line in the public sphere from point A - the city center - to point B - a cultural center building: a theater, a museum, etc. Tracing a line between the daily urban space and the space representative of art is set to connect, almost literally, the public – society, with its art – choreography and performance.
Throughout the performance’s duration, which can be  1 to 5 day long, the performers meet, converse, and negotiate with different people along its path. They communicate and correspond with whomever crosses the line’s trajectory, touching topics such as connection, border making, the status of the cultural institute for the locals, and more. The line itself is ephemeral in character, it keeps disappearing. Nevertheless, its presence is felt in the urge to draw it throughout the city and in the memory and thoughts it leaves in people's mind.

Initially commissioned by deSingel theater in Antwerp Belgium, Asingeline, an enacted thought opened the season of MAMAZA - the choreographic collective of Fabrice Mazliah, Ioannis Mandafounis, May Zarhy - as associated artists in september 2011. Since then, MAMAZA has been invited by the Goethe Institut to realize the project in Ouagadougou Burkina Faso, Johannesburg South Africa, and Lagos Nigeria in August 2013. Thereafter, the line continued to various cities in Europe, Israel, and Africa. Mazliah/Mandafounis/Zarhy wish to continue tracing the line as an invitation to re-think a line's purpose and meaning.
