Kristin

2024

Kristin is a choreographic sketch made of a series of physical positions, through which the dancer moves. In constant transformation, the dancer passes through various situations by changing her bodily position and its relation to the space around her.
The solo is a continuation of May Zarhy’s research into the relation between memory and movement. Together with the dancer Amit Zaretsky, they explore how her dance is driven by dealing with invisible forces, which are made visible for the audience and herself through her dancing. At some moments one can recognize a word or a context to that which she goes through, and then the moment passes and the agitation continues.
The solo is an accumulation of experiences condensed into a movement monologue called ‘Kristin’.

The performance of 'Kristin' follows a unique format which is: solo, conversation, and the solo presented a second time. The total length of the evening is 80 min.

This format was devised by visual artists Ruth Anderwald and Leonhard Grond, who called it HASENHERZ. HASENHERZ is a format appropriated from the musician Arnold Schönberg who developed in 1918 a method for his “Verein für Musikalische Privataufführung” (Society for Private Musical Performance), where works of contemporary music were introduced to the audience of musicians and music lovers. Schönberg laid down specific rules for his society, amongst them: the piece shall be played, then discussed with the artist and the audience, followed by another performance of the same piece. This ensures that by listening (or watching) the artwork a second time, it reveals itself in different ways.

In May's words: "Applying the format in today’s cultural environment, I see in it a clever method of mediation. It is a pedagogical format, in the good sense of the word, inviting the audience generously into the creative process. Learning the artists' vocabulary and confronting it with their own experience and interpretation, the audience members experience the solo twice, noticing how the human, informative exchange in the form of a conversation, influences one's watching. And at the same time, how this artists-audience exchange inspires the performance of the dancer in the second time after the conversation."
